When I approached my friend Chediak about wanting to do a music video, I had no idea I would end up hyperfocusing on balls for a week straight.
Taking inspiration from its title, the film takes us on a battle, with spheres fighting to become the Only 1.

Not everything makes to the final cut. These are some ideas lost along the way.
Breakdown
The aesthetic was achieved by a combination of effects, starting with chromatic aberration, blur and sharpen for a slight analog feel, followed by a desaturated/silver color grading and topped by a halftone texture and grain, which also helps to minimize color banding. A subtle vertical shake and flicker was added afterwards using the waveform as input to match the beat.
The faux 3D sphere is a combination of shadow, highlights, curves and deep glow. The sphere rotation is independent from the effects, making it look more realistic. Over 600 spheres were used in the entire film.
The sphere was then inverted using polar coordinates and gradients to create the tunnel. To speed up render times, 3 different comps were used for the tunnel/sphere. Full, half and quarter res, the full res tunnel comp being 11520x11520px.
